Partner, Business Development


John brings sixteen years of asset management experience to Spur Capital. Over the course of his career, he has developed expertise in manager evaluation and portfolio construction as well as a passion for venture capital.

Prior to joining Spur, John spent thirteen years at the Northern Trust Company. Most recently, he was a member of the Outsourced Chief Investment Officer (OCIO) practice with a focus on endowments, foundations and select family offices. In this role, John employed a systematic approach to help investment committees refine their Investment Policy Statements through decision-making frameworks that combine industry studies and empirical research. Over recent years, this work became increasingly focused on the sizing and constitution of portfolio budgets for risk, illiquidity, fees, and complexity.Earlier in his career at Northern Trust, John managed relationships with a broad range of intermediaries and helped investment advisory firms enhance the risk-adjusted returns of HNW and UHNW investment programs. In this role, John conducted quantitative analysis of both managers and asset allocation models to optimize portfolio returns net of fees, taxes, and inflation.John earned an undergraduate degree in Economics from the University of Wisconsin and an MBA from the University of Chicago with a concentration in Analytic Finance. He also holds the Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) designation and served as Chapter Executive for the Bay Area Chapter of the CAIA Association. As a panelist or moderator, he has explored topics ranging from Quantitative Approaches to Portfolio Construction to Behavioral Biases and their Implications for Policy Development. John previously served on the Chairmen’s Advisory Council of the Big Shoulders Fund and currently teaches the Stock Market Program to eighth graders at St. Constance School on the northwest side of Chicago, which happens to be his alma mater.
